Your house square footage is not your roof square footage
This is the single most common estimating mistake, and it always goes the same direction — short. A 2,000 square foot footprint is never a 2,000 square foot roof, because the roof is sloped. You have to multiply by a pitch multiplier.
The multiplier is √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). A 4/12 pitch multiplies your footprint by 1.054. A 6/12 multiplies by 1.118. A 12/12 multiplies by 1.414 — over 40% more roof than ground. Get this wrong and you are a bundle count short on delivery day.
How to use it
1. Pick the roof shape. Gable, hip or shed. This matters more than most calculators admit — see below.
2. Measure the footprint from the ground, or switch to Known roof area if you already have the real sloped figure from a report or measurement service.
3. Set the pitch. If you can't get up there, a pitch gauge from inside the attic against a rafter works, or estimate from the ground against a level.
4. Check the waste. The default changes with the shape — 10% for a simple gable, 15% for a hip, 8% for a shed. Push it higher for cut-up roofs with dormers, valleys or multiple planes.
Why hip roofs cost more than gables
A hip roof and a gable roof over the same footprint at the same pitch cover exactly the same surface area. That surprises people. The material difference is all in the edges and the waste.
- Ridge and hip cap goes up sharply. A gable has one ridge. A hip has a shorter ridge plus four hip lines that all need capping. On a 40 × 30 roof at 6/12 that is 40 linear feet for the gable versus 100 for the hip — two and a half times the cap.
- Waste goes up. Every course running into a hip is a cut, which is why the default jumps to 15%.
- Drip edge goes down slightly. A hip has no rake edges, just eaves around the full perimeter.
The calculator works all of this out from your footprint and pitch, using the real hip geometry: ridge equals length minus width, and each of the four hips measures (width ÷ 2) × √(2 + (rise ÷ 12)²).

How do you calculate shingles for a roof?
Measure the footprint and multiply by the pitch multiplier, √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²), to get the true sloped area. Add 10 to 15% for waste, then divide by 100 to get roofing squares. Multiply squares by 3 for bundles, since standard architectural and 3-tab shingles both run three bundles to a square.
How many square feet does 1 square of shingles cover?
One roofing square covers 100 square feet of finished roof. It is a unit of area, not a product — you buy bundles, and three bundles make one square for most asphalt shingles. Premium and designer shingles can run four or even five bundles per square, so check the wrapper.
How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?
For 2,000 square feet of actual roof surface with 10% waste, you need 22 squares, which is 66 bundles. Note that is 2,000 square feet of roof, not a 2,000 square foot house — a 2,000 square foot footprint at 6/12 pitch is about 2,236 square feet of roof, which pushes you to 74 bundles.
How many shingles do I need for a 1,500 sq ft roof?
1,500 square feet of roof surface plus 10% waste is 16.5 squares, or 50 bundles of standard three-bundle-per-square shingles. At roughly 64 shingles per square for architectural, that is about 1,060 individual shingles.
How do I calculate shingles for a hip roof?
The surface area is the same as a gable over the same footprint — footprint times the pitch multiplier. What changes is waste and cap. Use 15% waste rather than 10%, because every course dying into a hip is a cut, and budget considerably more ridge cap: the four hips plus the shortened ridge usually add up to well over double a comparable gable.
How much waste should I add for roofing?
Ten per cent for a straightforward gable, 15% for a hip, and 8% is reasonable on a simple shed roof. Go higher — 18% or more — on cut-up roofs with dormers, multiple valleys, or lots of penetrations. Waste is not padding; it is the material that ends up in the skip as offcuts.
What pitch is too steep to walk?
Most roofers treat 6/12 as the comfortable limit for walking without staging. From 7/12 up you want roof jacks or a harness, and above 8/12 production slows meaningfully — price the labour for that, not just the material. Never take on steep-slope work without proper fall protection.
